Analogic Corporation Receives Government Certification for eXaminer SX Explosives Detection System

PEABODY, Mass.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Jan. 26, 2009–Analogic Corporation (NASDAQ: ALOG) announced today that the U.S.
Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has certified the new
eXaminer® SX Explosives Detection System (EDS) for checked-baggage,
air-carrier applications. The compact eXaminer SX, brought to market in
conjunction with Analogic’s partner, L-3 Communications, can detect a
wide range of explosives in passenger baggage and is designed for
airports with size constraints or lower passenger volume.

Checked baggage loaded onto commercial flights in the United States must
first be scanned for explosives using certified explosives detection
systems. The busiest airports use large EDSs such as the
government-certified eXaminer 3DX, developed by L-3 and Analogic. Until
now, smaller airports with lower passenger volume have typically relied
on trace detection systems or manual checking. Designed to meet the
needs of all airports cost-effectively, the eXaminer SX provides them
with the same proven detection capabilities as the larger eXaminer 3DX,
and will be available in four configurations for inline and standalone

Analogic’s President and CEO, Jim Green, said, “The certification of the
eXaminer SX is a major step forward for aviation security. For more than
a decade, Analogic and L-3 have been working together to provide TSA and
airports around the world with advanced multi-slice Computed Tomography
(CT) technology to meet their baggage-screening needs. ”

The reduced-size eXaminer SX employs Analogic’s patented, 3-D,
Continuous-Flow CT technology to automatically scan checked baggage for
explosives. Like the eXaminer 3DX, it provides volumetric images of all
the contents of a bag. More than 900 eXaminer 3DX systems are deployed
in 26 countries worldwide, including the U. S., China, Israel, Japan,
and Great Britain.

“We are pleased to receive TSA certification for this strategic
product,” said Peter Cempellin, Vice President and General Manager of
Analogic’s Security Systems Division. “This enables Analogic and L-3 to
bring advanced threat detection capabilities and baggage-screening
efficiency to airports that aren’t able to use the larger eXaminer 3DX,
either because of space limitations or lighter passenger traffic.”

Tom Ripp, President of L-3 Security Systems Division, remarked, “We are
delighted to add the certified eXaminer SX to our CT-EDS line. This
leading-edge explosives detection technology in a smaller footprint,
combined with L-3’s unrivaled worldwide service and support, is the
solution that many airports have been seeking.”

In an agreement announced in March 2008, L-3 was awarded exclusive
worldwide rights to market and service the eXaminer SX as well as the
eXaminer XLB (eXtra Large Bore) ultra-high-speed security imaging system
currently in the final stages of development. Designed for large,
heavy-traffic airports, the eXaminer XLB is expected to be available for
delivery in late 2009.
