Checkpoint (carry-on) Applications

Anticipating the need for a more sophisticated explosives and weapons detection system than is currently in place for checkpoints, Analogic funded and developed the COBRA® (Carry-On Baggage Real-time Assessment), an innovative checkpoint security system that examines every item in a carry-on bag or parcel to automatically detect even small quantities of explosives, weapons, and other threats. The COBRA was enhanced under a TSA contract to develop a new generation of automatic threat-detection checkpoint security systems.

In 2006, the TSA ordered 5 COBRA prototypes. The first was deployed at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport and has been very well received by passengers and checkpoint inspectors. Two additional units will be in installed in two other airports later in the year.

In October 2007, the TSA placed an Indefinite Delivery Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) order for up to 40 COBRA systems over two years, field support services over five years, and potential further engineering services over five years. The initial order is for 12 units.

AN6980 COBRA
Checkpoint Automatic Explosives Detection System (Auto-EDS)

  • 3-D volumetric screening
  • Large, 80-cm bore
  • Scans up to 400 bags or bins per hour
  • Automatic bin return system
  • Laptops are scanned in their cases
  • Passengers can keep 3-1-1 bags in their luggage

The COBRA is a revolutionary advance over the labor-intensive, conventional 2-D screening used today. COBRA’s certification for auto detection is forthcoming.
