Overview
Analogic has been at the forefront of aviation security technology for more than a decade. A long-time leader in medical digital imaging technology, the Company applied its expertise in Computed Tomography (CT) toward creating cutting-edge security imaging systems to screen checked and checkpoint baggage. Supported by development contracts from the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA), Analogic creates high-performance systems designed to continually improve aviation security.
Checked Baggage: Analogic developed the EXplosive Assessment Computed Tomography (EXACT®) system, the heart of L-3 Communications’ eXaminer 3DX® Explosives Detection System (EDS). The EXACT is the world’s most advanced CT-based security imaging system to screen checked baggage for aircraft. More than 750 systems are installed in airports around the world.
Currently in development and being prepared for government certification are the KING COBRA and the XLB1100. KING COBRA is a reduced-size EDS that addresses the needs of small to mid-sized airports, which typically screen checked baggage with less-efficient Explosives Trace Detection (ETD) systems. The XLB1100 is an entirely new generation of more advanced, networkable EDSs, designed to screen checked baggage in large, high-traffic airports and able to scan up to 1,100 bags per hour.
Checkpoint Baggage: Analogic independently conceived the COBRA® (Carry-On Baggage Real-time Assessment) Checkpoint Detection System, an innovative security system that examines every item in a carry-on bag or parcel to automatically detect even small quantities of explosives, weapons, and other threats. The system was modified under a government contract and five prototypes ordered by the TSA. Currently installed in two U.S. airports, the COBRA is the first Checkpoint Auto-EDS System (Automatic Explosives Detection System) to be placed at a passenger checkpoint. COBRA prototypes will be installed in two additional airports before the end of the calendar year. In addition, the TSA has placed an Indefinite Delivery Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) order for up to 40 COBRA systems over two years, with 12 units on its initial order. The IDIQ contract also includes field service and engineering support.
Analogic Technology
Installed in airports around the world, Analogic’s systems help screen hundreds of thousands of pieces of checked baggage every day for explosives that could bring down an airplane. Analogic uses CT, the same lifesaving technology used to non-invasively diagnose illnesses in humans, in its state-of-the-art systems. Ours are the only systems able to generate three-dimensional images of the entire contents of a bag or parcel. The EXACT is designed to be used in-line or, where necessary, as a standalone system.

“Testing by TSA and the Department of Homeland Security has repeatedly demonstrated the advantage of fully integrated in-line checked baggage EDS systems, especially at large airports. In-line EDS systems have also proven to be highly efficient, extremely cost-effective and more accurate again at the primary purpose for all of this, the detection of dangerous items. They also have a lower maintenance cost, require fewer screeners and have less out-of-time service.”
